Automotive refinishing paint is a specialized coating used to repair damage to a vehicle's paint surface. It is widely applied in scratch repairs, localized respraying, and full vehicle refinishing. In addition to restoring the vehicle’s appearance, it also forms a protective layer that prevents rust and oxidation on the metal body. To achieve optimal repair results, it is essential to understand the fundamental principles of refinishing paint and apply proper application techniques.

1. Fundamental Principles of Auto Refinish Paint

The core principle of automotive refinishing paint lies in the formation of a durable paint film through chemical reactions, which enhances adhesion and longevity. Its main components include:

Resins: Determine the hardness, gloss, and weather resistance of the paint film. Common types include acrylic and polyurethane resins.

Pigments: Provide color and influence the coverage and UV resistance of the coating.

Solvents: Controls the fluidity of paint, facilitates construction, and leaves a uniform paint film after evaporation.

Hardeners (for two-component paints): Accelerate drying and improve abrasion resistance and adhesion.

The working principle of repair paint is that after being sprayed onto the surface of the car body, the solvent gradually evaporates, and the resin and pigment form a solid paint film. Some paints (such as two-component paints) also need to undergo a cross-linking reaction with hardener to improve the hardness and durability of the paint film.

2. Application Guide for Car Paint

A. Surface Preparation
Prior to application, the damaged area must be thoroughly cleaned and sanded to remove grease, dust, and old paint layers. This ensures proper adhesion of the refinishing paint.

B. Paint Mixing and Spraying
The paint should be precisely mixed according to the required color specifications, with the appropriate ratios of hardener and thinner added. During spraying, it is recommended to apply multiple thin, even coats rather than a single thick layer. Each coat should be spaced 5–10 minutes apart to prevent sagging or running.

C. Drying and Polishing

After spraying, the surface should be left undisturbed to allow the paint film to cure. In some cases, baking can be used to speed up the drying process. Once the coating has fully hardened, polishing compounds can be used for light buffing to achieve a smooth, glossy finish.
